Riding the Kandy–Ella Train: Window or Door?

It is widely considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. The seven-hour ride from Kandy to Ella winds through mist-shrouded tea plantations, dense pine forests, and dramatic mountain valleys.

But once you secure your ticket, you face the ultimate backpacker dilemma: do you fight for a window seat, or do you spend the journey hanging out of the open carriage door?

Both options offer a completely different way to experience Sri Lanka’s hill country. Here is a breakdown of the window versus door debate to help you decide how to ride.

The Window Seat Experience

Snagging a window seat is the classic, comfortable way to take in the views. This is the best option if you want to relax and absorb the scenery without the physical effort of standing.

  • Uninterrupted Comfort: You can sit back, eat your snacks, and read a book between the most scenic stretches. Seven hours is a long time to stand!

  • Steady Photography: If you are trying to capture the perfect shot of the Nine Arches Bridge or the rolling tea estates, resting your elbows on the window frame provides much-needed stability.

  • Easy Access to Snacks: When the train stops at local stations, vendors walk down the aisles selling spicy wade (deep-fried lentil snacks), roasted peanuts, and sweet tea. Sitting in your seat means the snacks come right to you.

  • The Catch: You are confined to one side of the train. If the spectacular valley view suddenly shifts to the opposite side of the carriage, you might miss it.

The Open Door Experience

Hanging out of the open train doors has become an iconic Sri Lankan travel rite of passage. It is thrilling, highly social, and offers a raw connection to the landscape.

  • The Ultimate Freedom: There is no glass between you and the lush green mountains. Feeling the cool hill-country breeze on your face as the train chugs along the tracks is an unforgettable sensation.

  • Panoramic Views: Sitting in the doorway allows you to lean out (safely!) and see straight down the tracks, giving you a 180-degree view of the curving blue train against the green tea leaves.

  • The Social Hub: The open doors act as the unofficial gathering spot for backpackers and friendly locals. It is a fantastic place to swap travel stories, share a laugh, and take turns snapping photos for each other.

  • The Catch: It gets tiring. Your legs might cramp from sitting on the metal floor, and you have to hold on tightly whenever the train jolts.

How to Score the Best View

Whether you prefer the relaxed window seat or the adventurous open door, you need to know how to book and board strategically.

  1. Avoid First Class: If you want the open-door experience or even just an open window, do not book a 1st class ticket. First-class carriages are air-conditioned, which means the doors and windows are locked shut.

  2. Choose 2nd or 3rd Class: Book a 2nd or 3rd class reserved seat. This guarantees you a spot to sit down when you get tired, but still gives you the freedom to wander over to the open doors whenever you want.

  3. Pick the Right Side: The scenery switches! From Kandy to Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya), the best views are generally on the right side of the train. From Nanu Oya onwards to Ella, the most dramatic drops and valleys shift to the left side.

  4. Practice Safety First: The tracks run very close to rock walls, tunnels, and branches. Never lean too far out of the door, always keep a firm grip on the handrails, and pull yourself entirely inside the carriage before entering a tunnel.

Ultimately, the best way to ride the Kandy-Ella train is to do a bit of both. Claim a window seat to rest your feet, but make sure you spend at least an hour sitting by the open door, letting the magic of Sri Lanka’s hill country rush right past you.
