Viharamahadevi Park

About this place

Viharamahadevi Park is the oldest, largest, and arguably the most colorful public park in the heart of Colombo. Originally built by the British colonial administration and named "Victoria Park," it was later renamed in 1958 to honor Queen Viharamahadevi, the mother of the legendary Sinhalese King Dutugemunu. Situated directly opposite the striking, colonial-era Town Hall building, this 45-acre urban oasis serves as the city's primary "green lung" and a favorite recreational space for locals and tourists alike.

  • Botanical Beauty & Features: The park is meticulously landscaped with sprawling green lawns, towering palm avenues, and ancient trees whose sprawling canopies offer deep shade. At its western entrance, visitors are greeted by a magnificent 15-foot golden brass statue of Lord Buddha, the largest of its kind in the country. The grounds also feature a series of elegant water fountains, lotus ponds, and a serene artificial lake. During sunset, you can often spot large fruit bats taking flight from the canopy.

  • Leisure and Activities: Beyond its natural beauty, the park is highly equipped for recreation. It features dedicated cycling lanes, well-maintained jogging paths, a children's play area, and even a small aquarium and mini zoo. The Viharamahadevi Open Air Stadium located within the grounds is a frequent venue for public concerts and cultural events.

  • Navigation and Tips: The park is conveniently located near several major Colombo landmarks, including the National Museum and the Public Library. Because entry is free and it is centrally located, it is an excellent, low-stress addition to any Colombo itinerary. There are numerous vendors scattered throughout selling local snacks like ice cream and fresh fruits, making it an ideal spot for a mid-day picnic under the trees.
