Uranwatuna Ella Waterfall

About this place

Uran Wetuna Ella (or Uranwatuna Ella) is a captivating 20-meter waterfall located within the famous Lankagama waterfall cluster, bordering the dense, emerald canopies of the Sinharaja Forest Reserve. Formed by the left branch of the pristine Hariyawa brook, it is one of the five breathtaking waterfalls encountered along the village's highly rewarding nature trail. The name "Uran Wetuna Ella" translates to "The Fall where Wild Boars Fell," stemming from a historical account in 1952 when a local villager witnessed wild pigs being swept over the rocky precipice by the rushing waters.

  • The Cascades and Base: Unlike some of the other falls in the cluster, the water here cascades rapidly over scattered, jagged rocks without forming a deep, swimmable pool at the base. While this makes it unsuitable for bathing, the dramatic way the water crashes and weaves through the boulders provides fantastic, dynamic photo opportunities.

  • The Rainforest Setting: Because it sits directly on the periphery of the UNESCO-protected Sinharaja ecosystem, the immediate environment is incredibly rich in biodiversity. The trail surrounding the falls is shaded by towering, ancient canopy trees like Hora and Na (Ironwood), and the undergrowth is thick with wild orchids, ferns, and exotic medicinal plants.

  • Navigation and Tips: The trek along the Lankagama waterfall circuit involves navigating uneven dirt paths, rocky steps, and wooden footbridges. As with all hikes in the Sinharaja rainforest, the trails are perpetually damp and highly prone to leeches. Wearing sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes and bringing adequate leech protection (like leech socks or saltwater spray) is absolutely essential for a comfortable hike.
