About this place

Ramboda Falls is a magnificent, multi-tiered waterfall situated in the incredibly scenic Pussellawa area of the central highlands, right along the winding mountain road to Nuwara Eliya. Standing at an impressive 109 meters (358 feet) high, it is the 11th tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka and a breathtaking natural monument that perfectly captures the lush, wild beauty of the island's mountainous interior. Fed by the Panna Oya—a tributary of the Kotmale River—the cascading waters carve their way down through the dense emerald jungle, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of raw power and tranquility.

  • The Three Sections: What makes Ramboda uniquely captivating is that it is not just a single drop, but consists of three distinct segments. The "Middle Fall" is the most accessible, situated right alongside the main A5 highway where the road crosses a bridge over the rushing water. However, the true majesty of the site is found by exploring the other sections. A moderately steep, winding pathway leads adventurers up to the towering "Upper Fall," which offers dramatic, unobstructed views of the massive main drop and the sprawling, misty valleys below. The "Lower Fall" requires a short descent toward the base and provides a fantastic vantage point looking up at the thundering cascade.

  • The Surrounding Landscape: The waterfall is perfectly framed by some of the most spectacular, undulating tea estates in Sri Lanka, offering incredibly photogenic contrasts between the neatly manicured bright green tea bushes and the stark white water. The broader Ramboda area is also deeply steeped in local folklore, closely tied to the ancient Ramayana trail, adding a layer of mythological significance to the breathtaking scenery.

  • Navigation and Tips: Reaching the base of the Upper Fall requires embarking on a short, 15-minute hike through a paved but often damp forest trail. Wearing closed-toe footwear with good grip is essential, as the constant mist keeps the steps and surrounding rocks very slick. The viewing platforms at the top provide fantastic photo opportunities, but expect to get lightly sprayed by the powerful mist if the water volume is high after a heavy rainstorm.
