About this place

Nuwara Eliya Racecourse, commonly known as the Race Course Ground, is a deeply historic and highly scenic sporting venue situated right in the heart of Sri Lanka's "Little England." Nestled at a breathtaking elevation of 1,868 meters (6,129 feet) above sea level, it proudly holds the distinction of being the only remaining horse racing track in Sri Lanka and one of the highest racecourses in the world. Framed by misty mountain ranges and charming colonial-era architecture, the lush, sprawling grounds offer a nostalgic glimpse into the island's British colonial past.

  • Historical Heritage: Established in 1875 by British planters, horse racing has been a cornerstone of Nuwara Eliya's social calendar for over a century. The flat track has a circumference of roughly 1,800 meters. The venue's most prestigious and highly anticipated race, the Governor's Cup, dates back to 1833 and remains the crowning event of the thoroughbred racing season.

  • The April Season: The racecourse truly comes alive during the famous April season, which coincides with the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year. During this festive month, the venue hosts a series of elite race meets alongside glamorous fashion shows, transforming the grounds into a bustling hub of high society, sportsmanship, and entertainment. Smaller meets are also occasionally held in August and December.

  • Everyday Activities: Even if you visit outside of the racing calendar, the Race Course Ground is a fantastic, open green space. It is highly popular among locals and tourists for early morning jogs, leisurely strolls, and enjoying the crisp mountain air. Independent operators offer casual horse and pony rides along the edges of the track throughout the year, making it a particularly fun stopover for families with young children.
