Pigeon Island National Park

Trincomalee, a picturesque marine sanctuary situated in the azure waters of Sri Lanka's eastern seaboard, is a picturesque marine sanctuary. It is one of only two marine national parks in the country, encompassing two distinct islands, Large Pigeon Island and Small Pigeon Island. Named after the endemic rock pigeons that historically colonized its rocky outcrops, it is celebrated for its powdery white-sand beaches and vibrant shallow coral reefs, making it a premier destination for marine exploration.

• The Snorkeling Experience: The main attraction of the park is its breathtaking underwater world. The shallow fringing reef surrounding Large Pigeon Island provides an exceptionally accessible snorkeling experience for all skill levels. The crystal-clear waters are home to over 100 species of exquisite corals—predominantly Acropora species—and more than 300 species of colorful reef fish. Snorkelers are immediately immersed in a bustling aquatic environment, swimming alongside vibrant schools of surgeonfish, parrotfish, and wrasses just meters from the shoreline.

• The Apex Encounters: The ultimate thrill of visiting the island is the opportunity for close-proximity wildlife encounters in their natural habitat. The protected reef serves as a vital feeding ground and nursery for juvenile Blacktip Reef Sharks, which are harmless to humans and can frequently be seen gliding gracefully through the shallows. Additionally, visitors often find themselves swimming alongside endangered Hawksbill and Green sea turtles that frequent the reef to graze on the abundant marine vegetation and sponges.

• Navigation and Tips: The island is easily reached via a 10 to 15-minute motorboat ride departing directly from the Nilaveli beach. The ideal time to visit is during the east coast's dry season, from May to September, when the ocean is remarkably calm and underwater visibility is at its peak. As a protected ecological zone, visitors must purchase an entrance ticket from the Department of Wildlife Conservation office before departing. To preserve the fragile ecosystem, it is absolutely essential to wear reef-safe sunscreen and strictly avoid touching, standing on, or kicking the coral formations while swimming.
