Pidurangala Rock

About this place

Pidurangala Rock is a massive, 200-meter-tall volcanic monolith located just a few kilometers north of the famous Sigiriya Lion Rock in Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. While it is slightly shorter and often less crowded than its famous neighbor, Pidurangala offers what is widely considered the absolute best, unobstructed panoramic view of Sigiriya rising majestically from the jungle canopy. It is a deeply historic site that blends a moderately challenging, adventurous hike with ancient religious significance.

  • Historical Connection to Sigiriya: The history of Pidurangala is directly intertwined with King Kashyapa, the ruler who built the Sigiriya rock fortress in the 5th century. When Kashyapa claimed Sigiriya, he relocated the Buddhist monks who were living there to a newly expanded monastery at the base of Pidurangala. The rock has functioned as a meditative retreat for monks for over two millennia.

  • The Cave Temple and Reclining Buddha: The hike begins at the Pidurangala Sigiri Rajamaha Viharaya, a white temple at the base of the rock. About halfway up the ascent, hikers encounter an ancient rock cave sheltering a magnificent 12.5-meter-long reclining Buddha statue. Constructed out of brick and later plastered, it was once one of the largest of its kind in the world before suffering damage from treasure hunters and being subsequently restored.

  • The Hike and the Summit: The climb to the top generally takes about 30 to 45 minutes and is split into two distinct stages. The first section involves navigating reasonably well-made, albeit steep and uneven, ancient stone steps. The final stage to the summit, just past the reclining Buddha, requires a significant amount of bouldering and rock scrambling through tight crevices. It is a highly rewarding effort, culminating on a massive, flat, wind-swept rocky plateau that offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding emerald plains.
