Nine Arch Bridge

The Nine Arch Bridge, affectionately known as the "Bridge in the Sky," is one of Sri Lanka's most iconic and photographed landmarks. Tucked away in the dense, emerald-green jungles and rolling tea plantations between the Ella and Demodara railway stations, this massive viaduct stands as a brilliant testament to early 20th-century engineering and the timeless beauty of Sri Lanka's hill country.

• Colonial-Era Engineering: Commissioned under British rule and completed in 1919, the bridge is famous for its unique construction materials. Because the steel originally intended for the project was reportedly reallocated to military efforts during World War I, local Ceylonese builders and British engineers brilliantly constructed the massive 300-foot-long, 80-foot-high structure entirely out of stone blocks, brick, and cement—without a single piece of reinforcing steel.

• The Train Experience: The bridge is an active part of the famous Colombo-Badulla railway line, which is widely considered one of the most scenic train rides in the world. Watching the bright blue (or sometimes red) Sri Lankan trains slowly rumble across the nine majestic arches against the backdrop of the lush jungle is an unforgettable, deeply atmospheric experience. Trains generally pass several times a day (typically around 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM, and 3:30 PM, though local schedules fluctuate).

• Navigation and Tips: The bridge can be reached via a few different routes from Ella town, including a quick 10-minute tuk-tuk ride or a highly scenic 30-to-40-minute walk through the jungle pathways. There are numerous small cafes dotting the hillsides surrounding the bridge that offer fantastic, elevated vantage points to sit with a cup of Ceylon tea while you wait for the train. While walking along the tracks is a popular activity, always remain highly vigilant and listen for the whistle of approaching trains.
