Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque

About this place

The Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, famously known worldwide as the "Red Mosque," is one of the most striking and historically significant architectural marvels in Colombo. Located in the deeply bustling, labyrinthine streets of the Pettah market district, it was commissioned in 1908 by the local Indian Muslim community who needed a central place of worship. Today, it stands as an iconic symbol of Colombo's incredibly diverse cultural and religious tapestry.

  • Unique Indo-Saracenic Architecture: The mosque is universally recognized for its spectacular candy-striped, red-and-white facade. The architecture is an eclectic and highly unusual blend of Indo-Islamic, Indian, Neo-classical, and Gothic styles, featuring soaring minarets, intricate onion domes, and uniquely shaped horseshoe arches. The striking color pattern was supposedly chosen so that it could be easily seen by sailors arriving at the Colombo port in the early 20th century.

  • The Heart of Pettah: Stepping into the mosque provides a profound contrast to the chaotic, sensory overload of the surrounding Pettah markets. The interior courtyards and prayer halls (which can accommodate over 10,000 worshippers at a time) offer a serene, cool, and deeply spiritual sanctuary away from the intense street noise just outside its towering walls.

  • Navigation and Tips: Reaching the mosque usually involves navigating through incredibly dense traffic and narrow market streets, so taking a tuk-tuk or walking from the main road is often easier than taking a car. Since it is a highly active place of worship, strict modesty is required: both men and women must cover their shoulders and knees, and women are required to cover their hair (robes and head coverings are often provided at the entrance for tourists). Photography is generally permitted in the courtyard, but you should always ask for permission before photographing the main prayer halls or individuals.
