Hakgala Botanical Garden is the second-largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka and an enchanting highland sanctuary. Situated at a towering elevation of over 5,400 feet (1,745 meters) above sea level in the shadow of the massive Hakgala Rock (which translates to "Elephant's Jaw"), the garden boasts a refreshing, cool temperate climate that sets it apart from the rest of the tropical island. Established in 1861 by British botanist George Henry Kendrick Thwaites, it originally served as an experimental cultivation site for the Cinchona plant (used to extract quinine for treating malaria) before transitioning to tea, and finally becoming an ornamental public garden in 1884.
Botanical Highlights: The garden's terraced layout beautifully complements the mountain's natural slope. It is world-renowned for its exquisite Rose Garden, which features numerous delicate hybrid varieties, and its dedicated Orchid House displaying rare indigenous and exotic species. The lower levels are brightened by a colorful Bulb Garden bursting with lilies, agapanthus, and gladioli, while the upper levels transition into a dense, misty arboretum and fernery filled with ancient, moss-draped trees and vibrant crimson Rhododendrons.
Mythology and Legends: Beyond its botanical significance, Hakgala is deeply intertwined with ancient mythology. According to the Indian epic, the Ramayana, this exact location was once the mythical Ashok Vatika—the pleasure garden of the demon king Ravana, where he kept the kidnapped princess Sita hidden away from her husband, Rama. The nearby Seetha Amman Temple, located just down the road, commemorates this legend.
Navigation and Tips: Because of the estate's natural elevation changes, exploring the expansive 28-hectare grounds involves a fair amount of uphill walking, though an electric golf cart service is usually available for rent near the entrance to help navigate the distances. The highland weather is famously unpredictable; thick mountain mist can roll in within minutes, followed by sudden afternoon showers, so carrying an umbrella and wearing warm layers is highly recommended for a comfortable visit.
