About this place

The Dambulla Cave Temple, also widely recognized as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest, best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. Towering 160 meters over the surrounding plains, this sacred pilgrimage site has been in continuous use for over 22 centuries, offering a profound glimpse into the island's deep-rooted Buddhist heritage and ancient artistic mastery.

  • The Temple Complex: The journey begins with a brief but steep climb up a rocky outcrop, offering sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, including the Sigiriya rock fortress in the distance. The complex itself consists of five separate, dimly lit caves nestled under a massive overhanging rock, each varying in size and historical era.

  • Art and Statuary: Inside the caves, visitors are greeted by an overwhelming collection of ancient artwork. The ceilings and walls are entirely covered in intricate murals depicting the life of Gautama Buddha and key events in Sinhalese history. The caves house exactly 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings, and four statues of gods and goddesses, including a magnificent 14-meter reclining Buddha carved directly from the living rock.

  • Navigation and Tips: As this is a highly venerated active temple, visitors must adhere to a strict dress code: shoulders and knees must be fully covered, and hats must be removed. You will also need to take off your shoes before entering the temple compound, so wearing thick socks is highly recommended to protect your feet from the hot stone floors. Beware of the resident macaque monkeys along the path, as they are known to be cheeky and will try to snatch food or loose items.
