About this place

Gartmore Falls, frequently referred to locally as "Sri Pada Falls" or "Adam's Peak Falls" due to its proximity to the sacred mountain, is one of Sri Lanka’s most breathtaking and unspoiled hidden gems. Tucked away within the lush, rolling green tea fields of the Gartmore Estate in Maskeliya, this spectacular 25-meter cascading waterfall remains relatively uncrowded, offering a deeply tranquil and dramatic natural escape in the central highlands.

  • The Upper and Lower Falls: The waterfall is entirely unique because it is formed by two separate mountain streams that merge just above the main drop. Visitors can explore two incredible perspectives: the Lower Falls and the Upper Falls. The lower viewpoint showcases the sheer power of the water crashing down the rock face directly into the vast Maussakelle Reservoir. Meanwhile, the upper section features a stunning, natural infinity pool right at the edge of the cliff, offering unparalleled panoramic views over the reservoir and the surrounding emerald mountains.

  • The Journey and Surroundings: Reaching Gartmore Falls is an adventure in itself. The journey takes you through winding, incredibly scenic roads surrounded by meticulously manicured tea plantations and local Tamil estate communities. Because the final stretch of the estate roads is deeply rutted and inaccessible by standard cars, visitors usually park their vehicles and hire a local tuk-tuk to navigate the rugged terrain up to the short trailheads.

  • Navigation and Tips: The short hike to the falls is relatively easy, but the rocks near the water can be extremely slippery, making sturdy, closed-toe footwear an absolute must. While swimming in the upper infinity pool is a bucket-list experience, it should only be attempted during the dry season (December to April) when currents are gentle. During the monsoon months, sudden water surges make it highly dangerous to approach the edge. Since there are no commercial shops or facilities at the falls, remember to carry your own snacks and drinking water.
