About this place

Gangaramaya Temple is one of the most important, vibrant, and eclectic Buddhist temples in the bustling commercial capital of Colombo. Located near the scenic Beira Lake, it was established in the late 19th century and played a pivotal role in the Buddhist revival movement in Sri Lanka. Today, it serves not only as a highly venerated place of worship but also as a sprawling museum, a vocational training center, and a striking display of diverse architectural styles.

  • Eclectic Architecture and Relics: The temple complex is a fascinating, somewhat chaotic blend of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese architectural influences. The main sanctuary houses a massive, brightly colored Buddha statue, but the temple is perhaps best known for its adjoining museum. The corridors are packed floor-to-ceiling with an overwhelming collection of donated artifacts, ranging from ancient ivory carvings and gold relics to vintage cars and priceless antique watches.

  • Seema Malaka: Just a short walk from the main complex is the Seema Malaka, an incredibly serene assembly hall for monks designed by the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Built on three interconnected platforms floating directly on the waters of Beira Lake, it provides a deeply peaceful, meditative contrast to the surrounding high-rise buildings and busy city streets.

  • Navigation and Tips: Because the temple is located right in the heart of Colombo, it is an easy tuk-tuk ride from almost any city hotel. As with all temples, conservative dress is required (knees and shoulders covered), and you must remove your shoes at the entrance. The stone floors can get quite hot in the afternoon sun, so bringing a pair of socks is recommended.
