About this place

Diyaluma Falls is a spectacular natural wonder and holds the prestigious title of being the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Plummeting an astonishing 220 meters (720 feet) down a sheer rock face, it is situated in the Badulla District, just a short drive from the popular highland towns of Ella and Haputale. The name "Diyaluma" translates to "rapid flow of water" or "liquid light" in Sinhalese, perfectly describing the breathtaking cascade that is steeped in local folklore and ancient romantic tragedy.

  • The Legend: According to local myth, the waterfall was created by the gods who were moved to pity by a tragic event. A young chieftain and his lower-caste lover tried to flee an angry kingdom by climbing over the escarpment using a rope of twisted creepers. Tragically, the woman's rope became entangled and she plunged to her death. It is said the gods created the falls from the grieving chieftain's tears to veil the site of the tragedy in a watery light.

  • The Upper Pools: While the massive main drop is viewed from the bottom near the highway, the true adventure lies at the top. The "Upper Diyaluma" area features a series of stunning natural infinity pools set right at the edge of the cliff. During the dry season, these crystal-clear pools offer a surreal and highly photogenic swimming experience, allowing visitors to safely bathe while looking out over the sprawling, misty valleys below.

  • Navigation and Tips: Reaching the upper pools requires a hike. The easiest and most popular route is to hire a tuk-tuk from Ella to the nearby Poonagala village, followed by a 30 to 45-minute downhill trek through long grass and scattered trees. While swimming is a bucket-list experience, never approach the edge or enter the water during the monsoon season, as sudden surges and powerful currents make it incredibly dangerous. There are no facilities at the top, so bring your own drinking water, snacks, and sun protection.
