Colombo National Museum

The Colombo National Museum is the largest and oldest museum in Sri Lanka. Established in 1877 by Sir William Henry Gregory, the British Governor of Ceylon, it is housed in a magnificent, sprawling two-story colonial building designed in a classic Italian architectural style. Surrounded by lush, manicured lawns and towering Banyan trees in the upscale Cinnamon Gardens district, the museum serves as the ultimate gateway to understanding the island's 2,500-year written history and rich cultural tapestry.

• The Royal Regalia: One of the most famous and striking exhibits in the museum is the spectacular royal throne, crown, and regalia of the last King of Kandy, Sri Wickrama Rajasingha. These priceless national treasures were taken to England by the British in 1815 and generously returned to Sri Lanka in the 1930s by King Edward VIII.

• Historical Masterpieces: The ground floor galleries trace Sri Lanka's history chronologically. Visitors can marvel at prehistoric fossils, intricate ancient stone carvings from Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, and arguably some of the finest bronze sculptures in the world, including the stunning 9th-century Mahayana Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.

• Navigation and Tips: The museum complex is incredibly vast, and the galleries on the upper floors focus thematically on traditional arts, crafts, and culture—including a fascinating display of intricately carved demon masks (like the Naga Raksha) and traditional swords. The same ticket also grants you entry to the adjacent National Museum of Natural History, which showcases the island's endemic flora and fauna. There is a small café on the grounds and an excellent museum shop selling high-quality replicas and literature.
