Buddangala Raja Maha Viharaya

Buddangala Raja Maha Viharaya is a staggering marvel of ancient devotion and forest asceticism located within the deep jungles of Ampara. Built in the 4th century BCE during the era of the Digamadulla Kingdom, this monumental complex was once a thriving spiritual center for meditative monks. At its peak, it served as a primary forest monastery, housing devoted ascetics within a sprawling natural landscape that spans across five massive rocky outcrops.

The centerpiece of the complex is the magnificent main stupa, a striking structure built at the summit of a 150-meter-high rock that stands as a beacon above the dense canopy. Original records and archaeological discoveries reveal that this sacred stupa houses the relics of Lord Buddha along with those of his two chief disciples, Arahant Sariputta and Arahant Moggallana.

The sheer scale of the natural engineering is mind-boggling; it is estimated that the ancient monastic grounds originally covered a vast 1,280 acres of rugged terrain. The foundation is equally impressive, utilizing the natural granite rock formations and boulders to support the ancient brickwork and drip-ledged caves, showcasing the sophisticated structural adaptation of ancient Sri Lankan builders.

Navigation and Tips: Buddangala Raja Maha Viharaya is located approximately 7 kilometers north of the Ampara town center, making it accessible via a scenic, albeit sometimes rugged, jungle road by tuk-tuk or private vehicle.

Footwear: Much like other ancient rock temples, the exposed granite pathways and stone steps can become incredibly hot under the tropical sun. It is highly recommended to wear thick socks to protect your feet while walking on the rocky surfaces near the stupa.

Dress Code: As a living place of worship, modest attire is mandatory (shoulders and knees covered). White clothing is the traditional choice for pilgrims and helps keep you cool.
