Brahmana Ella is a breathtaking, 17-meter-high waterfall nestled deep within the borders of the lush Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Fed by the crystal-clear waters of the Hariyawa brook, the waterfall is surrounded by dense, vibrant rainforest canopies and rich biodiversity, making it a perfect, off-the-beaten-path escape for nature lovers and photographers. The name of the falls is steeped in local history and folklore; according to legend, during the reign of ancient King Walagamba, a Brahmin stole a sacred golden melon and tragically slipped to his death down these very rocks while attempting to flee the king's army.
The Cascades and Forest: The waterfall plunges down a rocky precipice into a serene, clear pool below. Because of its location within the Sinharaja rainforest ecosystem, the surrounding environment is incredibly pristine, filled with the sounds of cascading water, exotic birds, and the fresh scent of the jungle. A small hydropower station is also located below the point where the branches of the brook meet.
The Five Waterfalls Route: Brahmana Ella is actually part of a highly rewarding nature trail in the Lankagama area that features a cluster of five magnificent, closely situated waterfalls formed by the same network of streams. Adventurous visitors usually combine their trek to see the nearby Lankagama Doowili Ella, Uran Wetuna Ella, Thattu Ella, and Gal Oruwa Ella on the same day.
Navigation and Tips: Reaching Lankagama and the waterfalls is an adventure that requires traversing some rugged, unpaved terrain. The roads can be highly dilapidated in certain sections, so hiring a 4x4 vehicle, a sturdy local tuk-tuk, or a lorry is highly recommended for the final stretch. The short walk into the jungle to view the falls is generally easy, but the wet forest floor can be slippery and prone to leeches, so sturdy footwear and leech socks or repellent are essential.
