Bomburu Ella Waterfall

About this place

Bomburu Ella, also known as Perawella Falls, is a magnificent natural monument widely celebrated as the widest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Situated deep within the misty Sita Eliya Kandapola Forest Reserve, this stunning cascade is not a single drop, but rather a massive collection of about ten smaller jungle waterfalls that converge and plummet 50 meters down a broad, rocky cliff face. Fed by the Dulgala Oya—a tributary of the Uma River—it creates a thundering wall of white water and spray that is entirely different from the tall, narrow waterfalls typically found on the island.

  • The Hike: Reaching the falls requires a highly scenic, albeit slightly rugged, 30 to 45-minute hike (roughly 1.5 to 2 kilometers) from the village parking area. The trail follows a water channel and winds through a dense, shady forest canopy, passing several smaller, beautiful lower cascades along the way before opening up into the massive rocky amphitheater of the main falls.

  • The Viewing Experience: The sheer width and power of Bomburu Ella make it incredibly photogenic. On sunny days, the heavy mist thrown off the rocks frequently creates vibrant rainbows at the base. Because it is located slightly off the main foreign tourist circuit, it retains a wild, untamed atmosphere, though it is a deeply beloved and popular picnic destination for local Sri Lankans.

  • Navigation and Tips: The trail consists of uneven dirt paths, gravel, and narrow bridges, which can become extremely slippery and muddy during the rainy season; wearing sturdy hiking shoes with good grip is absolutely essential. While the natural pools look inviting, bathing directly at the base of the main falls is highly dangerous and generally prohibited due to hidden rocks and sudden, powerful undercurrents. There are a few small local vendor stalls near the start of the trail selling water, snacks, and fresh food.
