Bentota Beach

Bentota is a premier resort town located on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, characterized by its long, sweeping stretches of wide, golden sand fringed by tall coconut palms. What makes Bentota geographically unique is that it sits on a peninsula—flanked by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean on one side and the calm, mangrove-rich waters of the Bentota River (Ganga) lagoon on the other. This unique positioning makes it the undisputed water sports capital of Sri Lanka.

• The Beach and Resorts: Bentota Beach (sometimes referred to as Ventura Beach near the northern tip) is noticeably cleaner, wider, and much less crowded than the beaches closer to Colombo or Hikkaduwa. The coastline is dotted with several high-end, luxury resorts—many designed by Geoffrey Bawa—that beautifully blend into the tropical landscape. It is highly favored by families, couples on honeymoons, and travelers seeking a peaceful, upscale coastal retreat.

• Water Sports Hub: Because of the adjacent river lagoon, visitors have access to an incredible variety of water-based activities that aren't possible on the open ocean. The lagoon provides safe, flat waters perfect for jet skiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, and banana boat rides year-round, regardless of the ocean's monsoon status. You can also take tranquil boat safaris deep into the river's mangrove tunnels to spot monitor lizards, crocodiles, and exotic birds.

• Navigation and Tips: Bentota is extremely accessible, located just a one-to-two-hour drive down the Southern Expressway from Colombo. While the nightlife here is very quiet compared to places like Unawatuna or Mirissa (mostly confined to hotel bars and relaxed beachfront dining), its proximity to the Brief Garden (the masterpiece estate of Bevis Bawa) and the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project makes it an excellent base for coastal day trips.
