Cycle through the ruins of Sri Lanka’s second ancient capital, featuring exceptionally preserved royal palaces, massive stupas, and the world-famous Gal Vihara Buddha statues.
Polonnaruwa succeeded Anuradhapura as the capital in the 11th century. Today, it is an archaeological park that is best explored by bicycle. The site includes the Parakrama Samudra (a massive man-made reservoir), the Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu, and the "Quadrangle"—a compact group of stunning religious buildings. The highlight for many is the Gal Vihara, where four large Buddha statues have been carved out of a single granite rock face, showcasing incredible craftsmanship. The ruins are spread out and well-preserved, offering a vivid glimpse into the island’s medieval golden age.
