Discovering the Dambulla Cave Temple

Dambulla
New

About this activity

Explore a massive rock overhang converted into five separate caves, filled with over 150 Buddha statues and vivid ceiling paintings dating back over 2,000 years.

The Golden Temple of Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The caves are tucked under a massive rock that towers over the surrounding plains. Inside, the walls and ceilings are covered in intricate murals depicting the life of the Buddha and historical events. The statues range from small seated figures to a massive 14-meter reclining Buddha carved out of the rock. The climb to the caves is moderate and offers beautiful views of the nearby Sigiriya rock. It remains an active place of worship, filled with the scent of incense and lotus flowers.
